 | Persiana is a 32 year old married woman from Shiraz, Iran. I'll be posting links and photos of Iran's archaeological and historic treasures. I think they are fascinating and belong to all humanity. Viewing them teaches one a great deal about the history, beliefs, arts and ways of living of ancient people. 11 12 15 17 19 22 25 27 30..33 |

This acclaimed vocalist and improvisation master was dubbed the 'Persian Nightingale' (due to his deeply soulful voice) by The New York Times and he has been named 'Iran's Pavarotti' by the Christian Science Monitor and other foreign media. (The song that is relayed at the end of the ABC clip can be viewed here: sheida shodam meaning "I fell in love.")
In Sep 2007 France awarded him 'Chevalier des Arts et Lettres' medal, one of the most coveted trophies in the world of art and culture, for his achievements in traditional Persian music. He was given the award in recognition of the meticulous attention he has paid to the musical interpretation and vocalization of the transcendent lyrics of the Persian poet and mystic Mawlana Jalal-ad-Din (Rumi). Also for his role in familiarizing European nations with oriental music and bringing about revolutionary changes in the field of Persian traditional music.
Here's Nazeri, the voice of Rumi's lyrics, in a rehearsal, in [search of] the path of Rumi. If I were to be asked of my opinion about this piece, I too would agree that 'God's lark singing Rumi's hymn at the gate of Pardis (Paradise).'
You may wish to listen to another song titled The Passion of Rumi, from the same album released in 2007, by Shahram Nazeri & his son Hafez Nazeri. The lyrics by..as written by Rumi 800 years ago.
 - World Music Central - Classical Persian Music
Oct 29, 2006 6:19pm (1 review) classical-music http://www.worldmusiccentral.org/article...- Excerpts from the page:
"Classical Persian music is an ancient art form and one of the earliest musical traditions known today. Because of the geographic location and sociopolitical role of the ancient Persian empire, Persian music and culture has contributed enormously to the foundation of many other musical traditions in Central Asia, Asia Minor, China and North India. Since becoming associated with Islamic culture after the Arab invasion (7th century AD), it has traveled throughout the Middle East, North Africa and the Mediterranean."
"Persian music is mainly melodic. It makes almost no use of harmony, and its performance is most typically solo, although sometimes a soloist is accompanied by an instrument which echoes and recapitulates each phrase as the artist performs it, a technique also widely used in Arabic, Turkish and Indian music. Its essence is neither the dramatic nor is it the intellectual or cerebral, but rather its quality is mystical and contemplative. Persian musicians recognize this, for in speaking of their music they never fail to relate it to the great lyrical tradition of Persian literature and to Sufism, the mystical movement of Islam whose special home is Iran."

The classical music (also known as art music [moosighie honari]) of Iran is a very old and very important tradition."
The goblet drum known as Dombak, Tonbak or Zarb, is a direct descendant of drums used by the ancient Sumerians. It is the chief percussion instrument of Persian classical music.
